Salem, VA, April 4, 2012 – LewisGale Regional Cancer Center Salem has once again earned Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. For more than 35 years, the cancer center has maintained this achievement by demonstrating it provides the highest level of quality cancer care.
“This is a testament to our ongoing commitment to provide patients with exceptional care that meets or exceeds national quality standards proven to give them the best possible outcomes,” said Scott Myers, C.M.D, M.B.A, Outpatient Oncology Services Director. “We offer a full range of cancer services, the latest technology, and a multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care.”
To maintain its accreditation, every three years LewisGale Regional Cancer Center Salem has to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review which includes an on-site inspection by a physician surveyor. While applying for accreditation is a voluntary process, achieving this national recognition is a symbol of quality care for patients.
Receiving care at an accredited facility ensures patients will receive:
- Comprehensive care, including a range of the most advanced services and equipment
- A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
- Access to cancer-related information, education, and support
- A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
- Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
- Quality care close to home
Along with achieving accreditation, LewisGale Regional Cancer Center Salem received commendation in the following areas: prevention and early detection, cancer registry education, and cancer-related improvements.
“I am very proud of our oncology program and the dedication of physicians and staff to help us earn this accreditation,” said Myers. “At the end of the day, it’s about providing our patients with high-quality, compassionate care.”
