The hospitals are among only 14 percent of hospitals nationwide and the only health system in Western Virginia to be named in The Joint Commission’s first-time report
Salem, VA, September 14, 2011 -- All four LewisGale Regional Health System Hospitals today were named as one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. Each of the LewisGale Hospitals was recognized by The Joint Commission based on 2010 data reported about evidence-based clinical processes linked to better patient outcomes for certain medical conditions.
More information about the recognition:
LewisGale Medical Center, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski, and LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, were among only 405 U.S. hospitals and 12 Virginia hospitals – as well as the only health system in Western Virginia -- achieving this exemplary level of performance for the following medical conditions and procedures:
- LewisGale Medical Center: Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Surgical Care
- LewisGale Hospital Alleghany: Pneumonia, Surgical Care
- LewisGale Hospital Montgomery: Heart Attack, Pneumonia, Surgical Care
- LewisGale Hospital Pulaski: Heart Attack, Pneumonia, Surgical Care
The Joint Commission report singles out hospitals based on their performance related to 22 accountability measures on heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, and children’s asthma care. For example, to be recognized as a top performer in heart attack care, a hospital had to achieve (1) a 95% or greater score on each of several clinical processes proven to give patients the best possible outcomes and (2) the hospital had to achieve a composite score of 95% or greater for overall heart attack care.
Today, the public expects transparency in the reporting of performance at the hospitals where they receive care, and The Joint Commission is shining a light on the top performing hospitals such as the four hospitals of LewisGale Regional Health System that have achieved excellence on a number of vital measures of quality care,” says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P, M.P.H, president, The Joint Commission.
“We understand that what matters most to patients is safe, high quality, compassionate care. It’s what all patients expect and deserve,” says Victor E. Giovanetti, FACHE, president, LewisGale Regional Health System. “That’s why our health system as a whole has made a commitment to The Joint Commission’s accreditation process and to delivering evidence-based processes that are proven to provide the best health outcome possible.”
“This announcement today is what LewisGale Regional Health System is all about, and it signifies the commitment we made nearly four years ago to create an integrated health care system where patients can count on unsurpassed quality and compassionate care at each and every facility,” adds Giovanetti. “This is quite an honor for all four of our hospitals to be named in this first-time report, and I want to commend our staff and physicians for making this possible. It also reflects other independent ratings and designations from organizations such as Healthgrades® and Anthem’s Quality-In-Sights® Hospital Incentive Program that place our hospitals and health system among the top in the country for high quality care.”
In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s Improving America’s Hospitals annual report at www.pwrnewmedia.com, each LewisGale Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website www.qualitycheck.org and in special issues of Perspectives and Benchmarks, two publications published by The Joint Commission.
