All LewisGale Imaging and Breast Centers Will Soon Offer Digital Mammography

February 23, 2012

Salem VA, February 23, 2012 – Women throughout Southwest Virginia will soon have access to digital mammography at all six LewisGale Imaging and Breast Centers. While the health system already offers digital mammography at its Roanoke and Salem sites, it will soon be installed at its Blacksburg, Pulaski, Daleville, and Alleghany locations.

“With all of our facilities being 100 percent digital, it gives the physicians the ability to instantaneously share images if they need a second opinion to ensure our patients always receive the most accurate diagnosis quickly,” said Victor E. Giovanetti, President, LewisGale Regional Health System. “This is just one more example of our commitment to offer some of the most-advanced technology available.”

Screenings performed with digital mammography have several advantages for patients including quicker exams with real-time images that can be displayed in seconds. Digital mammograms take as little as half the time of film. The images are also clear and offer a better view of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue.

Same- or next-day appointments will often be available at the following facilities for digital mammography with results ready by onsite board-certified radiologists within 24 hours.

  • LewisGale Imaging Center Montgomery (coming February 28), 540-953-5131
  • LewisGale Imaging Center Daleville (coming February 28), 540-776-4983
  • LewisGale Hospital Pulaski (coming March 14), 540-994-8509
  • LewisGale Women’s Center Alleghany (coming March 23), 540-862-6878

“In general, we recommend women age 40 and older get annual breast screenings,” said Jolene Henshaw, M.D., a General Surgeon with LewisGale who specializes in breast surgery. “Our goal is to find your cancer as small as possible. The smaller the cancer the less treatment you will need and the better your chances of survival.”

An estimated 226,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
