October, 2012 Low Moor, VA – Women in the Alleghany Highlands have access to some of the best mammography care in the nation through the Breast Imaging Center at LewisGale Hospital Alleghany. The center has once again received recognition for meeting national quality standards for its mammography services. The Food and Drug Administration gave the breast center a perfect score during its annual inspection under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and awarded the facility re-accreditation. The results of the inspection revealed the breast center received the highest rating possible, with an “All Items in Compliance” rating.
The intensive inspection compares specific items in six major areas including equipment performance, technologist QC, medical physicist surveys, personnel qualifications, medical reports and outcome audits. The philosophy of the MQSA and its implementation, through standards and inspections, is to support continuous improvement and mammography services and to ensure women that their mammograms are produced and interpreted accurately.
In March, the Breast Imaging Center installed digital mammography, the most advanced technology for the early detection of breast cancer. Screenings performed with digital mammography have several advantages for patients including quicker exams with real-time images that can be displayed in seconds. Digital mammograms take as little as half the time of film. The images are also clear and offer a better view of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue.
“The certification process is very stringent and I’m proud of the dedication of our staff and radiologists to continually achieve this designation,” said Connie Salyards, R.T.-R, Director of Radiology.
The breast center team includes technologists Alice Tucker, Kathy Buchanan, Kathy Lee and Dianne Loving. Mary E. Zelenik, M.D., serves as the supervising radiologist and Bruce Banning, M.D., is the interpreting radiologist.
“This designation is another example of our commitment to provide our patients with the highest level of care,” said Greg Madsen, CEO, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany.
