LewisGale Hospital Alleghany Earns Top Recognition for Quality Care

October 19, 2012

Low Moor, VA, October 2012 – For the second year in a row, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany has been named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. The hospital is one of only 244 U.S. hospitals to earn this distinction two years in a row, since The Joint Commission started publishing its report last year.

“We are proud to be among the hospitals to earn this recognition and credit our staff and physicians for helping us achieve this honor,” said Greg Madsen, CEO, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany. “At the end of the day it’s about providing evidence-based care that’s proven to give our patients the best outcomes.”

The Joint Commission recognized LewisGale Hospital Alleghany for achieving excellence in performance on its accountability measures during 2011 for pneumonia and surgical care.  For example, to be recognized a top performer for surgical care, the hospital had to achieve (1) a 95 percent or greater score on each of several clinical processes proven to give patients the best possible outcomes and (2) the hospital had to achieve a composite score of 95 percent or greater for overall surgical care.

Out of 3,336 hospitals submitting 2011 accountability measures data to The Joint Commission, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany was one of only 620 to meet or exceed the targeted rates of performance.

“When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have responded with excellent results,” said Mark R. Chassin, M.D., F.A.C.P., M.P.P., M.P.H., president, The Joint Commission. “This capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically reduced and high reliability is sought and achieved with regularity. Such day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today’s health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of the patients.”

In addition to being included in The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany is recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website, www.qualitycheck.org.  The Top Performer program will be featured in the November issue of The Joint Commission Perspectives and the October issue of The Joint Commission: The Source.
