Low Moor, VA, July, 2012 – LewisGale Hospital Alleghany ranks among the top in the nation for gynecologic surgery according to a recent report released by HealthGrades®, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization.
The hospital received a 5-Star designation for gynecologic surgery, the highest score a facility can achieve for its patient outcomes. HealthGrades found that women who undergo gynecologic surgery at 5-Star rated hospitals experience 56 percent fewer complications than lower-performing hospitals. In the 19 states studied, 9.2 percent of women undergoing gynecologic surgery experienced an in-hospital complication. If all hospitals performed at the level of the 5-Star hospitals, 37,711 of these complications could have potentially been prevented. The most common in-hospital complications for gynecologic surgery patients included bowel obstructions, hemorrhages and respiratory complications.
“This recognition means that women can trust they can receive care in their own community that meets or exceeds national standards,” said Greg Madsen, CEO, LewisGale Hospital Alleghany. “We credit Dr. JoAnn Dudley with helping our hospital achieve this distinction. Her commitment to patient care has set the standard for excellence in this region and beyond.”
For more than four years, Dr. JoAnn Dudley has provided gynecologic services to women in the Alleghany Highlands.
“My top priority is providing patients with personalized care that’s focused on quality and safety,” said JoAnn Dudley, M.D. “To receive this national recognition is an honor and a testament of our dedication to provide women with the best surgical care possible.”
LewisGale Hospital Alleghany is one of 461 hospitals to receive a 5-Star designation for gynecologic surgery.
“A clear disparity exists between the complication rates that occur at hospitals performing at lower levels for gynecologic surgery compared to those HealthGrades has identified as 5-Star hospitals,” said Divya Cantor, M.D., M.B.A., HealthGrades Senior Physician Consultant and author of the study. “Our goal is not only to arm female patients with up-to-date statistics on clinical outcomes as they research and select healthcare providers, but also to name the hospitals that are setting the national standard for gynecologic surgery.”
