Blacksburg, VA, June, 2012 – LewisGale Hospital Montgomery is now offering its patients with chronic acid reflux disease a new, incisionless treatment option to relieve the pain and discomfort. LewisGale physician, David Stoeckle, M.D., performed the first Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) in March.

Chronic acid reflux disease, also known as GERD, occurs when the valve between the esophagus and the stomach isn't working properly, allowing stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus. This can irritate the lining of the esophagus causing heartburn and other symptoms. Left untreated, acid reflux disease can also put a person at increased risk for esophageal cancer.

_When medications alone aren't enough, TIF offers patients a minimally invasive treatment option that addresses the underlying cause of acid reflux,_ѝ said Stoeckle. _With this procedure we are able to create a new antireflux valve for the patient without any incisions._ѝ

The TIF procedure is performed through the patient's mouth using an endoscope and a device known as EsophyX_. Once the device is advanced through the esophagus and into the stomach, it is used to reconstruct the antireflux valve using the patient's own tissue folds.

The procedure takes less than an hour and is performed under general anesthesia.

_Since there is no incision patients recover faster and have less pain,_ѝ said Stoeckle. _Most patients go home the next day after surgery._ѝ

Patient interested in learning more about this treatment option can contact Dr. David Stoeckle at 540-552-0005.
