Breast Care Procedures

LewisGale Regional Health System's Breast Care Network

Breast care procedures can be related to prevention, detection, diagnosis or treatment, and it’s one of the reasons our multi-specialty physician services are available, conveniently located and experienced in providing a total spectrum of care.

Some of the more common procedures associated with breast care include the following:

Mammogram

This low-dose X-ray obtains an image of the breast that can be used for both screening and diagnostic purposes. It’s considered one of the best tools in the early detection of breast abnormalities and cancer.

Digital Mammogram

Digital mammography images are clearer than analog film. Because early detection of breast cancer is so important in delivering a positive treatment outcome, digital mammography offers distinct advantages as a diagnostic tool. The high-resolution images it produces provide unprecedented clarity, and diagnoses with precision accuracy. Additionally, it provides the largest field of view on the market today and real-time results in seconds so that exams are completed more quickly. Digital mammography will soon be available at all LewisGale Imaging and Breast Centers.

Breast Ultrasound

Used in conjunction with mammography, this procedure uses sounds waves to provide additional diagnostic images and insight.

Breast MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast offers insight not available through other imaging technologies. Its use is growing as a tool to complement other diagnostic procedures.

Breast Biopsy

Various breast biopsy options, including minimally invasive procedures, exist to help your doctor further examine breast tissue abnormalities by using imaging technology such as stereotactic, ultrasound or MRI to guide the needle.

Sentinel Node Biopsy

Sentinel Node Biopsy is a procedure through which the sentinel lymph node – often the first lymph node in which cancer will appear after spreading from the primary tumor – is surgically removed and examined to determine whether or not cancer cells are present.
