Cardiac Rehabilitation & Wellness

For most people with coronary artery disease, the right prescription for lifestyle change is an important component of treatment. Cardiac Rehab increases cardiovascular efficiency, offers physical and psychological benefits, speeds recovery and helps prevent prolonged disability. Our medically supervised treatment plan and program involves families and loved ones.

We teach patients how to incorporate lifestyle modifications including:

  • exercise
  • nutrition
  • education
  • stress management
  • smoking cessation

Phase I (Inpatient)

The Cardiac Rehab staff offers education to inpatients that have had an acute event such as:

  • heart attack
  • open-heart surgery
  • cardiac catheterization/PCI
  • chest pain (angina)
  • congestive heart failure

Phase II (Outpatient)

Education
Individual educational programs and 12 weekly classes are designed to provide an understanding of heart disease and its risk factors and help patients gain awareness and acceptance of necessary lifestyle changes.

Support
Heart-to-Heart, our quarterly social group, features speakers and special presentations on topics related to living with heart disease. LewisGale also participates in Mended Hearts, the American Heart Association’s program for heart disease survivors.

Testing
A treadmill stress test is recommended to measure functional capacity to ensure the development of the most effective program possible. Other testing methods may include the Six-Minute Walk, performed within the guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Pertinent information, including monthly progress reports, is available to the patient’s physician and/or medical director. We offer pre- and post-outcome testing to evaluate improvement and/or lifestyle modifications that were made during the program. These outcomes are sent to the patient and their physician at discharge.

Exercise
Guided, supervised exercise is an important form of rehabilitation therapy. Cardiac Rehab patients participate in a scientifically and medically sound program that is monitored by our specially trained Cardiac Rehab nurses and exercise specialists. We typically offer morning and afternoon exercise sessions two to five days per week, depending on your individual needs. Exercises are monitored with telemetry by trained Cardiac Rehab nurse therapists and exercise specialists. We offer a variety of exercise equipment including:

  • treadmills
  • stationary bikes
  • recumbent bikes
  • weights

Staffing
Our services are under the guidance of a physician medical director. Staff members may include registered nurses, exercise specialist, and exercise physiologist. Who can Participate?

Physician referral is required. Patients who may be eligible for the program include those who have had:

  • a recent heart attack
  • cardiovascular surgery
  • stent placement
  • those with angina pectoris

Cost
Many insurance carriers provide coverage for monitored Cardiac Rehab therapy. Questions regarding reimbursement should be referred to your insurance carrier.

Phase III

This is a supervised exercise program. Upon completion of Phase II, patients may choose to stay with LewisGale’s Cardiac Rehab program. Time slots are available two to five days per week for a nominal fee.

CHF

Heart Failure program is a monitored and supervised program for those patients with congestive heart failure. This program is designed to improve quality of life, energy and endurance levels, understanding of the disease process and how to best live with heart failure. This nominal self pay six-week program includes two exercise visits per week (12 sessions) and one education session per week taught by RNs, a Registered Dietician and a Certified Stress Recovery RN.

Stress Relief

The emWave Stress Relief System, with related HeartMath materials and techniques, is a new healthcare tool we use for stress reduction and emotional management. By learning and mastering the self-regulation techniques in this system, patients can manage stress as they become active and empowered in directing their own health and wellness while moving toward symptom resolution and recovery.

Wellness

Our Wellness program is for patients with risk factors for heart disease. These are low risk patients who have received an order from their physician to begin a supervised exercise program. In this nominal self pay eight-week program (24 visits), patients receive education on heart disease and its risk factors, tailored to fit their individual needs.
