Since its inception in 1986, the LewisGale Regional Cancer Center at LewisGale Medical Center has been dedicated to better understanding human cancers and finding more effective treatments. As one of Virginia’s most comprehensive cancer centers, LewisGale Regional Cancer Center has active programs in clinical research, community outreach, prevention and treatment.
Patients who visit LewisGale Regional Cancer Center have access to some of the most innovative and advanced therapies available today. With our new state-of-the-art facility, the center’s physicians can provide a full array of surgical, medical, and radiation treatment therapies. And, because our center’s clinicians and physicians work closely with research scientists, new drugs and treatments are quickly transferred to the clinical setting, offering patients improved therapeutic options.
Our Philosophy
We believe there are several key elements to dealing with cancer: (1) prevention through education, (2) early detection through screenings, and (3) a team-oriented approach to comprehensive, individualized treatment. And throughout this entire process, we believe in treating the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Patients have access to the entire staff, which includes physicians, nurses, counselors, and a chaplain. Whether it’s a question about treatment or just the need to see a friendly face, there’s always someone close by.
Research & Education
As part of our recent cancer center
expansion we've enhanced patient's
comfort with a spacious chemotherapy
suite featuring floor-to-ceiling
windows, spectacular mountain views,
and individual television sets.
The practice of William Fintel, M.D.
and Paul Richards, M.D., Oncology
and Hematology Associates of
Southwest Virginia, serves 17
counties in the region.
A collective name given to several hundred distinct conditions, cancer can be a somewhat confusing disease. That’s why it’s so important to educate people on what it is, as well as understanding risk factors and available treatments. From discussing family history to diet to environmental factors, we talk about what the risks are, and how to cope with them. We also discuss screening methods that can help catch cancers early, before they become life threatening.
But the quest for knowledge doesn’t stop with our patients. Through ongoing research, our staff is helping develop improved procedures and technologies that can benefit cancer patients throughout southwest Virginia. In fact, the Regional Cancer Center’s breast cancer research program is one of a few in Virginia approved by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
The Regional Cancer Center Expansion
LewisGale has furthered its commitment to excellence in patient care and new technology by expanding the facility to enhance ongoing programs and services and promote new developments in cancer research, treatment and prevention.
The recent spring 2004 completion of our cancer center expansion allows us to provide our patients with the most comprehensive cancer treatments in the region, as well as a more convenient, spacious facility. We’ve enhanced patient’s comfort with a spacious chemotherapy suite that features floor-to-ceiling windows, mountain views, and individual television sets. And for added convenience the center offers more physician offices, improved parking, and a dedicated front-door greeter service.
