Pulaski, VA, December, 2013 – Governor McDonnell recently appointed hospital employee James Nunn, MS, CHP, DABR, to the Virginia Radiation Advisory Board. James is the Senior Medical Physicist and Radiation Safety Officer at LewisGale Hospital Pulaski.

“I am quite honored to be selected for this appointment,” said James. “There are many highly qualified radiological specialists in Virginia and I am humbled to know that my name was even on the list, much less being selected to the board.”

As a member of the Radiation Advisory Board, James will help ensure that Virginia regulations concerning the use of radiation and radioactive materials continue to be consistent with the best practices and current research in the field for radiation safety.

It’s a role James does not take lightly.

“My goal is to ensure the public’s protection from hazardous material,” emphasized James. “As medicine and industry change rapidly it is vital that laws and statues evolve at the same pace.”

For more than six years James has been charged with overseeing the use of radiation at the hospital to ensure consistency with state and federal laws that are designed to protect the health and safety of patients and staff. This impacts many areas of the hospital from the cancer center to interventional radiology where radioactive materials are used to help diagnose and treat various diseases.

“We are very proud of James and honored to call him one of our own,” said Mark Nichols, CEO, LewisGale Hospital Pulaski. “He represents what makes our hospital among the best in Virginia for high-quality, care.”
