Blacksburg, VA, September 30, 2014 – LewisGale Regional Health System is inviting all nurses in Southwest Virginia to attend its 6th Annual Nursing Research Day “A Culture of Safety: Integrating Research into Practice,” to be held December 11 at Virginia Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Blacksburg.  

“It is important that the nursing care we deliver to our patients is evidenced based and responsive to changes in the healthcare environment,” said Loressa Cole, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE and Chief Nurse Executive for LewisGale Regional Health System. “This annual research day will focus on creating and maintaining a culture of safety by integrating current nursing research findings into practice, consistent with our commitment to the patients we serve.”

As part of the one day conference, nurses will hear from nursing research experts, have the opportunity to submit their own research projects, and receive contact hours upon approval. This activity has been submitted to the Virginia Nurses Association for approval to award 5 contact hours. The Virginia Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Notable conference speakers include:

Jane D. Englebright, PhD, RN, CENP, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer, Patient Safety Officer, and Vice President of HCA

Dr. Englebright is a nationally recognized nursing leader and serves as an At-Large Nursing Representative to The Joint Commission’s Board of Commissioners. She is also the chair of the Board of Governors of the National Patient Safety Foundation, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Rebecca Culver Clark, PhD, RN
Dr. Clark is a Nursing Research Consultant for LewisGale Medical Center. Previously she served as the Director for research and evidence based practice at a Magnet designated facility where she worked with nurses to develop and disseminate research projects. She has conducted research in the areas of breastfeeding support, collaboration among nurse and physician leaders, and improving immunization rates in ambulatory settings.

Theresa Gaffney, MPA, RN, DNPs
Gaffney is currently a Doctoral Nursing Candidate at George Mason University and Senior Director, New Product Development for the American Nurses Association. Her major research interest and areas of expertise include knowledge transfer, nurse decision making, safety, quality and health policy.

Attendees who are also interested in sharing their own research projects, should submit their poster abstracts directly to Diane Gully,, no later than October 27. Applicants will be notified by November 10 if they have been selected to participate in the poster display.

  • Title:  Centered and bolded text on first line of the page, followed by one blank line
