March is National Nutrition Month and a time to understand and focus on how food choices and physical activity habits play an important role in promoting good health. This year’s theme is “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle” and encourages people to change their eating and activity habits around three key points – consume fewer calories, make informed food choices, and exercise daily.

By focusing on nutrition and physical activity in March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – National Nutrition Month’s sponsor – helps people form lifelong habits around better food choices and exercise, and realize the many benefits that accompany them, including:

  • Good health
  • Improved quality of life
  • Healthy weight maintenance
  • Decreased risk of chronic disease

A healthy eating plan begins by choosing nutrient-rich foods and drinks, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, eggs, beans, lean meats and poultry, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. At the same time, it’s important to avoid or limit added fat, sugar and salt to our daily diet through food choices.
