I twisted my knee and now have pain and instability with activities. I’m very active. What can I do?
First, it is important to determine the actual cause or diagnosis. Important questions in your physical history involve the way the injury occurred, was there initial swelling, was there a pop or snap? Were you able to walk after it happened? Do you have a history of previous injuries? Your physician will use this information along with diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, CAT scans or MRI, to determine your diagnosis.
The most common diagnosis associated with these complaints can be torn cartilage or meniscus, a torn ligament, such as ACL, as well as kneecap problems. Once the diagnosis is determined then the correct treatment can be started.
