Program Director Welcome
I would like to personally welcome you to our new Family Medicine Residency Program in Southwest Roanoke! The LewisGale Medical Center (LGMC) Family Medicine Residency Program welcomed its inaugural class of 8 residents in July, 2019. We are very excited to recruit those interested in exploring the possibilities in the new training program and working with our diverse patient population. We are looking forward to expanding primary care in our community, with your help.
Family physicians have the complex, yet rewarding, job of connecting with our patients and caring for them over many years; understanding not only their history but also the impact of the community on each individual life. With our comprehensive knowledge of the patient’s medical and social history over time, the family physician can often diagnose and treat the patient within the context of their situation, family and community, thereby helping to improve clinical outcomes and lowering healthcare costs.
Despite the clinical care available in the region of Roanoke, Va., there is still significant need for improvement in our health outcomes based on the county health rankings and roadmaps. This gives us a unique opportunity to help not just each individual patient, but also the community as a whole. We are rewarded with this great opportunity to expand our primary care providers in the area, within our brand new family medicine clinic.
Our goal is to provide you with not just the best education, but to also develop and grow your leadership skills, with your wellness in mind.
At LGMC Family Medicine Residency you will thrive on your journey to becoming a compassionate, innovative, family medicine leader with the community-focused academic faculty in a friendly and supportive environment focused on physician wellness.
We look forward to hearing from you and meeting you in person!
Shala Sundaram, MD, FAAFP
