Digital mammography

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to take a picture of breast tissue to screen for breast cancer. It identifies changes in the breast tissue before a lump can be felt and to find a lump's location before biopsy or surgery. LewisGale Regional Health System was the first health system in the region to offer digital mammography and 3D mammography for the highest degree of clarity and accuracy.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in her lifetime. Regardless of family history, the two most common risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and getting older.

Schedule your mammogram online or call one of our imaging centers. If your family history or other circumstances puts you at high risk for breast cancer, be sure to inform your doctor and ask about our genetic counseling services or the option of a breast MRI.

Breast biopsy

When lumps or abnormalities are detected in the breast during a mammogram or other screening procedure, a breast biopsy may be needed to determine whether the abnormality is cancerous.

A breast biopsy is a highly accurate, minimally invasive method for locating the abnormality and removing a tissue sample for testing. It is typically used when the abnormality is too small to be felt, making it difficult to locate by hand. The procedure is performed by a specially trained radiologist or surgeon using stereotactic, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance.

An image-guided breast biopsy is an outpatient procedure that is less invasive than a surgical biopsy. Leaving little to no scarring, this procedure can be performed in less than an hour. The image guidance allows the radiologist to biopsy the abnormality while avoiding important nearby structures, such as blood vessels and vital organs. It's also an effective way to evaluate calcium deposits or tiny masses.
