  • Pre-diabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes

Nutrition classes we offer

We offer individual sessions and group classes, depending on your preference. During our individual sessions, one of our dietitians will sit down with the patient and talk through his or her health background and develop a plan about specific dietary changes. The individual sessions typically take an hour.

After the initial session, we recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment to assess progress and discuss any additional changes that need to be implemented.

Scheduling an appointment with the diabetes center

To schedule an appointment with one of our dietitians, you will need a referral from your practitioner. Once we receive a referral form with insurance information and lab results, we will reach out to you about scheduling.

Insurance typically covers the cost of three hours of nutrition counseling per year. This allows you to receive an initial appointment and then schedule a follow-up appointment.

How to get to the diabetes center

Prior to your session, you will receive instructions in the mail about how to get to our office. We are located on the clinic side of the hospital in Medical Building B. However, patients must register at the main entrance prior to class.

You may park either at the main entrance or clinic side of the hospital. LewisGale Medical Center offers a free shuttle if needed.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s production of glucose and insulin levels. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body suffers from a lack of insulin produced by the pancreas. Type 2, gestational and prediabetes are all a result of an excess amount of sugar in the blood, or high glucose levels.
